Prince George

Prince George's County Organics Composting Facility

County facility utilizes aerated static piles (CASP) to compost over 100 tons/week of food scraps and food-soiled paper with yard trimmings. Tour of recently expanded facility operated by Maryland Environmental Service for Prince George’s County includes food scraps receiving and contaminant screening, processing and mixing, CASP pad, windrow turning and compost screening.

DC Water

DC Water Bioenergy Facility: Thermal Hydrolysis, Anaerobic Digestion And Bloom®

DC Water’s Blue Plains wastewater treatment plant installed thermal hydrolysis and anaerobic digester (AD) facilities commissioned in 2015. The thermal hydrolysis process treats and prepares sewage solids as a sterile food source (carbon) for microbes in DC Water’s four digesters, each with 3.8 million gallons capacity. Digested solids create an exceptional quality Class A biosolids product marketed as Bloom®. Biogas is combusted in three 5 MW turbines, producing enough biogas to run one-third of Blue Plains.

Days End

Days End Farm Horse Rescue: In-Vessel Composting, Bedding Products

Located in Howard County, Maryland, Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR) is a national rescue and rehabilitation facility sheltering 110 to 150 horses annually. After rehabilitation, horses are evaluated and provided the training needed to best prepare them for adoption.  Utilizing a grant from the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Animal Waste Technology Fund, DEFHR installed an Earth Flow composting system to process manure from its 25-stall barn. Finished compost is utilized as bedding and on pastureland.
